Flags of our Heroes honors deceased veterans

Sadly, many Veterans have passed before they could fly on their Honor Flight to Washington – many thousands were lost before Honor Flights even existed.

We are still able to honor those deceased Veterans through Flags of Our Heroes on upcoming Mission 24 on May 2, 2026.

We invite families or friends of deceased Veterans to submit an application and a 5 x 7 photo of the veteran and a copy of the obituary notice, if available. Please do not submit death certificates or DD214s.

The application may be completed online (PREFERRED) at Flags of Our Heroes on the Honor Flight Syracuse website (www.HonorFlightSyracuse.org). There is also a form that can be downloaded and printed.

Photos should be mailed to: Honor Flight Syracuse, PO Box 591, Syracuse, NY 13209-0591, ATTN: Flags of Our Heroes.

NOTE: Please send clear photos. Photos of your Veteran in uniform are best, but not required. We strongly recommend you do not send original or irreplaceable photos that could be lost in the mail or misplaced.

For Mission 24, applications and photos must be submitted no later than April 17, 2026.

A flag of a deceased War Veteran has been donated and will be taken, along with your veteran’s photo, on Mission 23 to the Memorials in Washington, D.C. The flag and your Veteran’s photo will be placed in front of the appropriate Memorial and a photo taken.

After the mission, you will receive an invitation to a solemn presentation ceremony closest to you:

In Veterans Hall at the Onondaga County War Memorial at 1:00 pm on Sunday, June 28, 2026.

OR

At the Smith Savage American Legion Post 583 in Dexter, NY at 1:00 pm on Saturday, August 15, 2026

At the ceremony, your family will receive an 8 x 10 photo, a folded US Flag, and a formal certificate from Honor Flight Syracuse honoring the veteran and their participation in spirit with us on the recent Mission. We will do our best to return all items you submit to you after the ceremony.

We deeply appreciate your veteran’s service to our Country. We will be honored to commemorate your veteran’s service through the Flags of Our Heroes Ceremony.

Sincerely,

Nate Bradley
